8th Annual Northern Nationals
Event will be held on August 9-11, 2019
About the Wawa Drags
Wawa, Ontario plays host to the Annual Northern Nationals Drag Races at the Wawa Municipal airport. This race is part of the NAPA Auto Parts Show Me the Money Tour and promises to be an exciting weekend for racers and race fans.
Wawa is located about 250 km north of Sault Ste. Marie on the northeastern corner of Lake Superior. Wawa is the northern anchor community for one of Canada’s Top 10 drives along the Lake Superior coastline and is well-known for its famous Goose Monument and spectacular waterfalls, beaches and fishing opportunities.
The race venue is literally 2km from downtown Wawa and within walking distance of hotels, restaurants and shopping. That makes the Northern Nationals one of the most unique races on the tour. Wawa is known for its hospitality for visitors and the second weekend in August is no different.
Come and be part of the action and witness 1/8 mile head–to-head bracket racing at its best. Bring the family as there will be entertainment on and off the track. Stay tuned for details!
What is a drag race?
In basic terms, a drag race is an acceleration contest from a standing start between two vehicles over a measured distance at a specifically designed drag race facility. These contests are started by means of an electronic device commonly called a Christmas Tree.” Upon leaving the starting line, each contestant activates a timer that is, in turn, stopped when the same vehicle reaches the finish line. The start-to-finish clocking is the vehicle’s e.t. (elapsed time), which serves to measure performance and often serves to determine handicaps during competition.
- All backpacks, purses or other bags/coolers will be checked at the entry gate by event staff. Absolutely no alcohol is permitted to enter the venue.
- No bicycles, scooters, roller skates, rollerblades, etc. will be allowed past the admission gate into the venue for the safety of all patrons.
- Absolutely no pets are allowed. (Service Animals Excepted).
- No motorized vehicles including motorcycles, mopeds, scooters, ATV etc. are allowed.
Lori Johnson Director of Community Services and Tourism in Wawa and Northern Nationals Race Manager was instrumental in bringing drag racing to Wawa and a strong supporter of the August event.
